When the System Broke, Movers Got It Done
Last year was one of the toughest that many of us can remember. A chaotic contract rollout, new business rules, and the longest federal government shutdown in modern history created widespread uncertainty at the very moment families needed reliability the most.
Through it all, the moving industry stepped up. When shipments were delayed, dropped, or at risk of falling through the cracks, experienced movers worked behind the scenes to salvage moves and keep families on track. A lot of that work may not have been acknowledged on a big stage, but it made all the difference for the service members counting on us.
And the results proved it: Year over year, key performance indicators improved for moves handled outside the since-canceled GHC contract, with higher overall satisfaction and fewer missed pickups and deliveries.
Now, as we head into 2026, the focus has to be on getting back to basics. That means stability, predictability, and a program that actually works for the companies and crews doing the work, so they can deliver a quality move experience for our service families.
Reforms like the elevation of household goods shipments to a core mission and the creation of the Personal Property Activity signal progress — but stability, predictability, and transparency must follow.
MFA has long said that experienced movers can’t stay in the game — and new capacity can’t grow — without fair pay, clear rules, and the ability to plan ahead and retain skilled crews.
As reported by Military.com: “The transportation businesses were not getting a rate that made participation competitive,” a defense official told Military.com. “It was not advantageous for them to stay in the system.”
Military families deserve a system they can trust, and that starts with supporting the professionals who make every move happen. In 2026 and beyond, getting it right means restoring confidence, strengthening capacity, and ensuring military families receive the reliable, first-class service they deserve.
